Children’s lexical Frequency Dictionary for Rioplantense Spanish: the Cuenta Palabras

Abstract

Lexical frequency is one of the most important psycholinguistic variables in the study of the oral and written language´s comprehension and production. This variable explains why words that we encounter more frequently in daily life are processed more quickly and effectively than those that we rarely read or hear. Any research carried out within the framework of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, cognitive psychology and neurosciences, whether with children or adults, in which the comprehension or production of lexical items is evaluated, should consider lexical frequency for the selection of stimuli to work. The objective of this work is to present the development of the Cuenta Palabras, a children’s lexical frequency dictionary for Argentinian Spanish in rioplatense variety. For this purpose, a corpus was built from school texts from different disciplinary areas according to the levels of schooling (1st to 7th of primary education).
