Socio-spatial inequalities in Southern Patagonia: stratification logics in Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur’s cities

Abstract

The cities of the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida and Islas del Atlántico Sur (AeIAS) have suffered significant population and spatial expansion in recent decades. The particular form that this expansion took is linked to the conflictive interrelation between urban public policies, the mercantile construction of the city, and the popular production of habitat. Our objective is to identify the main factors that define the urban social space and analyze the existing socio-spatial stratification processes with data from the National Census of Population, Households and Housing 2010. We return to the important work of Horacio Torres about the construction of the social map of Buenos Aires and the current approaches that continue with the line of research that analyzes socio-spatial stratification from the implementation of multivariate analysis techniques based on geographic information systems (GIS). This allows us to identify the underlying structures of the cities and to what extent the population is spatially distributed in homogeneous groups within it and heterogeneous among themselves.
