Abstract

This paper analyzes the electoral instability of the party system in Corrientes province from 1983 to 2011, by watching the election of the Executive power and the Legislature. According to political science literature, electoral laws determine the format of party systems. This study, however, argues that the party competition is also linked to the institutionalization levels of the system. In fact, the transformation of party system in this province was not related to the various reforms in the electoral law, but was a consequence of the increasing fragility of the patterns of competition and cooperation between the major political actors. In addition, it is argued that, despite the principle of proportionality established by the Constitution, the electoral system contains elements of a majority election system, which allow us to understand why the major parties continued to gain most of the elective offices in a context characterized by a great electoral
volatility.
