Abstract

We performed a review on what is already known about the afro-
descendant woman from the city of Cordoba, until when records allowed
identifying them by that status. The upper time limit was 1840,
corresponding to the last census where the "condition" status and in a few
cases the "class" were used. Mainly, we analysed bibliographic resources,
including primary documents only when referring to the approaches and
results included in the bibliography. We mainly focused on quantitative
population-based studies, and contextually, on case or theoretical studies,
which provided relevant information but do not allowed us to reach the
general behaviour of the population. We concentrated on issues related to
numerical representation, legal status (slaves or ‘libres’), sales and
manumissions, and finally, on studies dealing with couple establishment
and on population reproduction of these women. We finally revised past
and present contributions of their demographic behaviour.
