Wind resource estimation in an isolated community: Lago Hermoso, Neuquén

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the wind resource in Lago Hermoso, which is a dispersed rural community that does not have access to electricity distribution networks, since it is essential for its growth. Lago Hermoso does not have meteorological data or population census data that includesthe energy consumption habit of its inhabitants. An indirect methodology consisting of two stages was used, firstly, the regional mesoscale wind climate was determined, for this, wind measurements from distant meteorological stations but affected by the same wind climate and a mass-consistent model were used. Subsequently, the microscale resource was estimated using a linear model and the results of the mesoscale model. Also, indirectly, a first estimate of electrical energy consumption was proposed and under assumptions the potential wind energy was calculated. The results showed that there are numerous sectors with very good to extraordinary quality of winds. The analyzed area is suitable for planning the use of wind energy since the demand for electricity could be satisfied with this resource.
