Abstract

Individual performance may be very important in the development of events and historical transformations. Bearing that in mind, this work relates several episodes of a documentary, concerning to the industrialization of the United States and the Second Industrial Revolution, with theoric material pertinent to that processes, and also with more general economic concepts and theories, highlighting, this way, some of the most outstanding characteristics of these phenomena as well as of the crisis of 1873. Some concepts of marxist theory, such as surplus value, complete the analysis of the documentary, favoring a better understanding of the aforementioned processes.
For this, the work follows the organization proposed by the documentary, which narrates, in each chapter, the rise of characters such as J.D. Rockefeller, C. Vanderbilt and A. Carnegie, who stood out in the oil, railways and steel sector respectively, being, therefore, important actors during the transformation that made the United States an industrial power, in the frame of the second industrial revolution.
In addition to analyzing the participation of each of them in the economic and industrial changes of their time, the different individual cases are interrelated, seeking to encompass in a global way the most outstanding aspects of the aforementioned historical processes.
