Abstract

Since the mid-40s, with the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and more intensely from the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995, developed countries have promoted a new globalization trend in terms of trade
openness and financial liberalization. With the support of the (weak but widely disseminated) hypothesis of free trade as a key instrument for paretian collective
progress (provided the international division of labor is performed on the basis of
Ricardian comparative advantages) industrial economies have built a successful
repressive apparatus on developmental efforts of emerging countries (mainly, made
up by World Bank, WTO and International Monetary Fund regulations). In this
context, the aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, it seeks to contribute to
the analysis of the double standard the US and the leading countries of the European
Economic Community use to manage global trade policies. On the other hand, it
seeks to introduce a new methodology for analyzing the impact of the international
division of labor on the geographical distribution of welfare, by working with a new
database of sectoral value added embodied in gross exports and a three-stage econometric estimation using a new software for automatic model selection
(GSREG).
