Abstract
The extent of the water surface of Lake Mar Chiquita (Córdoba-Argentina) experienced increases and decreases over the years. However, after 2003 entered a contraction regime, exposing large tracts of land covered with salt. From 2006 observations from space with different satellites allowed document the presence of white clouds originating from the salt that is raised from the ground with intensity winds occur. In this paper we present several examples of clouds of salt documented MODIS images and using AVHRR data from satellites NOAA 18 and 19 the observed changes in the water body of the lake between 2006 and 2012 and discuss two particular events. For each spectral response is analyzed in the reflective bands and brightness temperatures, individually or combined into indices. While this study is exploratory in nature, the results indicate that certain indices used in the literature to identify these clouds do not apply across the board and it is then necessary to obtain them locally. For this particular work we found that the index represents, the difference radiant temperature in the bands of 11μm and 12μm, serves to identify and study the clouds and storms of salt.
