Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explore the factors that contribute to the development of communality by peasant and indigenous migrants in a tourist destination such as Playa del Carmen, Mexico. It should be noted that Mayan migrants have autonomous cultural elements that allow them to reproduce forms of communality despite constituting themselves as migrant communities. The following findings were obtained: cultural elements prevail and identity is strengthened as a group. The job they do is organized at three levels: entrepreneurs, domestic or family unit and temporary employment and, despite being in a different territory than the one of origin, they appropriate the one they inhabit for their survival, therefore, the Mayan culture does not it loses, rebuilds and adapts to the new social space.
