ABSTRACT

Language contact is a complex phenomenon and because of this it has been studied from different perspectives. In this article we focus on contact phenomena from a generative grammar perspective (Chomsky 1981, 1986 and subsequent work). The goal is to address the following question: what are the grammatical effects of the influence of one language over another? By framing this question within the Generative Linguistics tradition we can describe the range of grammatical systems enabled by our linguistic capacity and, ultimately, determine the limits of linguistic variation and change.
