Encompassed by Sir Francis Drake... (1854).

In this paper I analyze some initial aspects of the discursive construction of Patagonia in the forgotten documents dealing with the second circumnavigation of the world undertaken by Francis Drake between 1577 and 1580, which have been compiled by W. Vaux in his edition
The World Encompassed by Sir Francis Drake... (1854). The logbook of the chaplain Francis Fletcher and the heroic narrative published in 1628 by the nephew and heir of the pirate, also named Sir Francis Drake, contain their verbal and ideological appropriation of Patagonia, and
Drake‘s first encounter with the inhabitants called Patagous or Pentagours. The evident intertextual relationship of these narratives with the The first voyage around the World (1519-1522), of Pigafetta, and the Fletcher‘s note about the giants who worship Settaboth, (presented
as an appendix), allow us to interpret some ideological and imaginary aspects of these first layers in the ―Patagonian palimpsest.
